"In other words, our sense of self is not set in stone. Identity is a creative process."

Very inspirational article. Seeing it demonstrated by Eileen so effectively is a great example.

Today’s post really landed for me. Eileen Gu’s insights make sense to me.

As for my past practices, I spent some time studying the work of Gregory Kramer and insight dialogue. While his work was for interacting with another person it lends itself to understanding our own inner dialogue.

1. Pause – Creates space for mindfulness

2. Relax – Releases tension and cultivates acceptance

3. Open – Develops receptivity to the present moment

4. Trust Emergence (or “Attune to Emergence”) – Allows understanding to arise naturally

5. Listen Deeply – Practices mindful, receptive listening

6. Speak the Truth – Expresses what’s genuinely present

The practice begins after silent meditation, then pairs or groups use these guidelines to develop mindfulness and insight through speaking, listening, and mutual silence.

I've been doing this process for over 10 years after a very difficult marriage and finally divorce. I needed to find myself after the manipulating and sabotage on my person. Meditation really kick started it off, but this process has led me to be the most genuine me I would never have imagined!! Sending this to those who do not think it is possible! Thank you for explaining it in such a down to earth way.

Amazing, and thank you for sharing something so personal, and the positive outcome for you.

Nicely laid out. Great example of how Buddhist teaching really should be advice for daily life.

Worry that people are chasing after their 'authentic self' rather than understanding the flexible nature of a conventional one!

Thank you for sharing. Good point there, a lot of fads in society over time that can be distracting to a core truth.

Thanks for the post. It is quite amazing how narratives emerge and how easy it is to be swept away by them and how the influence how a situation or life is experienced. As you said, the capacity to notice is powerful all by itself. It gives opportunity for choice.

Fantastic post. This is a very helpful illustration of non self.

One way I practice this is by asking myself "where is this "I" located in the body?"

Not finding a "real I" time and again, deflates mental narratives and gives a lot of release and relieve.

Tell us when you find it please.

This/these concepts are showing up more in my awareness. I don’t if my bias/lens is opening to this iteration of the “no-self” experience or what. But I have new appreciation for the concept of a continuously arising (not-fixed or evolving linearly) world and self context.

Need better words.

Thank you both, it is a great insight that you can experiment and be your own inner curious scientist to work with novel thoughts, responses to thoughts, and ultimately thinking in alighment with who you really want to be. I appreciate you both

Thank you for this post and the deep reinforcement of all the skills and practices you’ve found to be essential in flourishing.

I’d like to add how much I admire the journalist’s courage in asking the question.

Lastly, today someone asked me what kind of meditation I do. I follow the ones provided in the Healthy Minds app. Could you please answer that for me, whether it is in this forum or in Dharma Lab’s Ask Me Anything?

Gratefully…
